    quickvpn

My little exercise tonight was attempt to get a freeswan client to connect to my RVS4000. I couldn’t do it, at least not with my patience level. I did, however, manager to get the Linksys QuickVPN software to work under wine without any trouble.

    1. Install wine
    2. Download the latest version of QuickVPN from LinksysInfo
    3. Run the QuickVPN installer (e.g. wine VPN_Client_xxyy.exe)
    4. Login to your router,
      1. Setup a VPN user for yourself
      2. Generate a new certficate
      3. Export the client certificate to your desktop
    5. Move the client certificate (in the screenshot you’ll see this as RVS4000_Client.pem) to “~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Linksys/Linksys VPN Client”
    6. Fire up the client and put in your login and connection details.
    7. Enjoy!

After finding this article and reading how simple it is, I decided to try for myself. I downloaded QuickVPN 1.1.0, got my network admin to create an account for me and had them create and forward a certificate.

I then installed QuickVPN (via wine) to my laptop running Kubuntu Gutsy. QuickVPn installs without a hitch. When I use it to connect to the office VPN it also appears to work.

I say appear because both QuickVPN running on the laptop and the logs on the VPN report that I have established a connection. HOWEVER! What do I do from here? When I run ifconfig I can clearly see that I still have the local ip address assigned by my intranet and do not see any virtual devices that might be assigned the new address that QuickVPN should have. I can’t ping any hosts that I should be able to reach now that the VPN is established. Essentially I haven’t any real access.

Again, both QuickVPN and the router show me as connected, so I’m satisfied that I have a connection, I just don’t seem to have anyway to use it.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!
