At the moment it appears that we (Ubuntu) are trying to be all things: server, embedded, workstation, desktop, etc.. If Bug #1 is about taking away Microsoft’s user share we’re not going to do it without a concerted effort on the desktop. Fedora seems to get this. I have had a number of folks here in town leave Ubuntu for Fedora because of the desktop love. Click on read more for an example video of the love.

No more brown! Make it any color other than brown. It looks too much like the Zune Turd.

There is no doubt that Fedora’s desktop graphics are far superior to anything official on Ubuntu. I don’t think this is a bad thing. It is healthy to look somewhere else for inspiration.
First hurdle is the base colour Ubuntu is trying to use. Browns, Oranges, and yellows are very difficult colours to capture and make pleasing to the majority of tastes.
Basing the entire look and feel on Tango Project colour palette is a much wiser move. Why? cause the brown in Tango colour palette matches the rest of the colours , icons, splash screens… etc.
Additionally, I am a strong believer in nature and its beauty. Using nature for the backgrounds, splash screens, GDM, etc. would yield a much prettier graphics that is more widely appealing.
Finally, simplicity of design should be the top priority. cluttering the desktop with a myraid of colours, patterns, fancy icons and such will only confuse the user.
I think using a simple grey theme for the window manager, clearlooks with dark grey colour variation and putting orange/brown buttons on the window manager buttons would yield a very nice, not in your face, type graphics.
Just my 2 Candian cents worth
